Rough Sex

I find this Ireland Online article quite interesting:

Keanu Reeves has landed in hot water with an American domestic violence group after carelessly joking about how "some women" like rough sex in a magazine interview. The Matrix star tells men's magazine Playboy how difficult it was to perform a rape scene with Hilary Swank in The Gift, but, when asked if his roughness may have helped the actress get into character for boxing film Million Dollar Baby, he quips: "Yeah. And, by the way, I also learned a bit of... well, that some of the ladies don't mind it... Hah, that's awful to say." The remark has upset officials at top American group Women Against Domestic Violence, who claim Reeves' flippant comment made them "literally ill." Melissa Rimmel who runs the confidential online support group for survivors and current victims of domestic violence, fumes: "I cannot believe he would even think it was OK to say that. "Why doesn't someone educate that man? I can see him saying that in passing and thinking it means nothing but, the thing is, so many women are sexually abused every day by their partners and, no, those women do not want that, nor do they like it."
I think there are some women who like having it rough, but preferably done with their consent. I think Rimmel needs to clarify that - IMO - crucial line of definition between what's acceptable and what isn't. She has to be crazy to think people will perceive Keanu's comment as a stamp of approval on rough sex that Rimmel seems to interpret as 'sexual abuse'. Which makes me wonder how she will react if she learnt that there are quite a few romance readers who adore having superAlpha heroes and near-violent sex scenes in some romance novels, especially in historical, futuristic, and paranormal romance novels. hmmm I have to say I see nothing wrong with his comment. Could just be me though. And really I am not a huge KR fan.

Loved the devil movie with AC though...

Should we email the woman some titles ;)

Sybil - yeah, I agree with you, which is why I found her reaction rather puzzling. Which titles would you suggest? I vote for Karen Robards's SEA FIRE. That'll give her a serious fit. :D

When my husband and I were taking our Pre-Cana classes before we got married we had a very interesting couple talk about sex. Basically taught anything goes between consenting married adults. At the time I was shocked that we were being taught this by representatives of the Catholic Church. Looking back I think it's pretty cool and forward thinking.

Ms. Rimmel has to realize that there is a difference between abuse and consentual sex.

Yeah, just something for people to get their panties in a knot over. At no point did he say rape is okay - probably having a problem with the fact that he acting the part of a rapist and then makes that comment. I'm not sure I understand the question though. Not having seen the movie, why would his roughness help Hilary Swank for Million Dollar Baby unless she fights back ruthlessly.

Anyways, anyone who has watched an episode of any Law & Order show knows there are plenty of ways people have consensual sex. I'm shocked it took him this long to learn it and he's what 35?

Maybe romance books have jaded me ;)
