On Being an Oddity

Every time there is an online buzz around a new romance release, I just know I'd not enjoy it. After many expensive mistakes, I learnt a painful lesson not to pay any attention to a buzz. Even so, I have given some a try and almost all left me indifferent, which includes:

  • Outlander - Diana Gabaldon
  • the Dark series - Christine Feehan
  • the Dark-Hunter series - Sherrilyn Kenyon
  • If Angels Burn - Lynn Viehl [it's a great title, though]
  • What to Do About Mia - Millie Criswell
  • Into the Fire - Anne Stuart [the heroine is so spineless that I wanted to strap a broomstick to her back]
  • Passion - Liza Valdez
  • Miss Wonderful - Loretta Chase
  • The Switch - Lynsay Sands [I find it interesting that she's no longer a flavour of the month with the online romance community; each of her new medieval-era romantic comedy used to generate a fever]
  • Phantom Waltz - Catherine Andersen [I'd rather re-read Outlander than to read this again]
  • Beyond Innocence - Emma Holly
  • Not So Innocent - Laura Lee Guhrke [my first LLG wallbanger]
  • Cry No More - Linda Howard [to be fair, I'm heavily biased where the subject of this story is concerned, so I should count this one out]
  • My False Heart - Liz Carlysle [I think that's the title, anyway]
  • Shadowheart - Laura Kinsale
  • the Undead & Unwhatever series - MaryJanice Davidson
  • the Sookie in Dallas series - Charlaine Harris
  • The Real Deal - Lucy Monroe
  • Tell Me Lies - Claudia Dain [I avoided her books since, until To Die For, which is pretty good]
  • Lord of the Wolves - Heather Graham
  • the Anita Blake series - L. K. Hamilton [Mary Sue at her finest]
  • the Stephanie Plum series - Janet Evanovich [can you say repetitive?]
  • that 'Rothgar is coming' book that had a huge buzz for a year or so - Jo Beverly
  • All Through the Night - Connie Brockway
  • The Windflower - Sharon & Tom Curtis [since this is supposed to be about the h/h, it's not memorable because all I could remember about this book is Cat who, IMO, richly deserves his own story.]
  • debut - Cheryl Holt [I can't remember the title but it was her debut]
  • The Bronze Horseman - Paullina Simmons [I didn't realise until later that 'romantic sagas' aren't common in the US, which is probably why TBH is so popular]
  • Judith Ivory - full stop.
  • Julie Garwood - full stop.
  • Mary Jo Putney - full stop.
  • Carla Kelly - full stop.
Am I an oddity? Who cares? :> If there is a huge buzz about a new release, there is a good chance that I wouldn't enjoy it. I had wondered for a while if it was to do with having high expectations, but then I realised that I'm like this with films as well. I see what I see, regardless of people's opinions around me. Also, it makes me realise that I have a definitive set of likes and dislikes, so no matter how many times people tell me how wonderful [or bad] something is, it always falls back on whether I like it or not. I do envy those who are able to enjoy sharing a love for a film or book. It's indeed a nice feeling, but it's a tad too expensive to support. I'm still trying to work out what it is that I look for in a novel and what attracts me. Book cover is the easiest way to catch my eye, no problem, but what actually makes me buy it? I haven't really thought about it before, so I'm curious. Be good, be bad & be safe.

Who knows really what makes us like or dislike anything. One reason I make a really bad fangirl, can't think of any author that I love everything they have written. Can't think of 'the' perfect book, really good ones I love or reread - yes. But that wouldn't make them perfect, in my eyes or anyone elses.

It is funny though looking at your list I have read Passion, Beyond Innocent, Shadowheart, Sookie (except the last), All Through the Night, The Real Deal, Anita Blake (not the last three) and like garwood historicals. I think I am done with Sookie, know I am done with AB. 8 are tbr and the others like Kelly, Dain and Jo Putney I just haven't had an interest in.

I have had the Plum thing rec'ed repeatedly but not my thing. I really hope I like the Undead though since I have like four.

I didn't know Sands use to be so popular. who knew...OH and I did read a Kenyon cuz I reviewed one. LOL I like your lists ;) but will shut up now.

I don't think you're an oddity. More than half of what you listed I'd agree with, though I did enjoy some.

So much depends on our mood, and how much a book is hyped. I think I was the only person to hate Marjorie M. Liu's Tiger Eye. Was it my mood, too much hype or the writing?? Who knows? I'm leaning towards writing--I still think the dialogue was attrocious. Maybe I'm a glutton for punishment, Shadow Touch is on my TBR pile, I can't help but think I must have missed something with TE.

I'm better off when I avoid the buzz as you put it, and I found when I stopped hyper analyzing everything, I started to enjoy more of what I read.

I'm all about the buzz but like you I've been really burned in the past. You'd think I'd learn but nooo just recently with all the hype surrounding Valdes I had to have it and gave up just a few pages into it.

Please, aren't we all odd?

I'm so glad that someone else said If Angels Burn didn't work for them. I thought I was a misfit. I enjoyed it but, I didn't feel like it was romantic.

Into the Fire (fangirl)
Passion
Cry No More (I don't consider it a romance)
U&U - Yeah I'm wrapped around that woman's finger
LKH - I'm trying to break free
Evanovich - book 4-6 were killer
All Through the Night
Julie Garwood (once a fangirl)

Other than that, I totally get what you are saying. Then again, I haven't tried to read many of these books but it's because I know I'll probably not like them.
Oh, I have the Time Traveler's Wife because of the hype and I have yet to touch it.

I have to read Gabaldon sooner or later because I promised one of my best friends (who loves them) that I would. I'm just stalling a while longer.

J.D. Robb - don't get it
SEP - nope
Feehan - nope
MacAlister
Sands
Kenyon

See, we're all just freaks ;)

I thought it was Mr. Impossible that was the overhyped Chase book. ^^; I liked Miss Wonderful, but the followup? I swear, I never, ever wanted to see a book with Ginji Amano from GetBackers as the romantic hero ^_-

Personally, I believe it takes a balance between paying attention to the hype and knowing one's own tastes well enough to read between the lines.

Case in point, the current rage is the J.R. Ward books. Posts about them are everywhere. But when I checked them out and found out they were about vampires I knew they aren't for me. The only reason I can manage to read and enjoy Feehan's are because they're not actually vampires. Same thing with Sands and, oh, heck what's the other author that does funny "vampires"? The few "real" vampire romances I've read I did not like. So, I can enjoy reading the hype but I also know my own limits. (BG)

Oh, and I'm glad somebody else has finally fessed up to not liking Brockway's All Through the Night. I hated that book. Well, maybe not hated. No, hated works. Yet people were/are always telling me how good it is. I still haven't figured out if we're talking about the same book . . .

Just remembered that Kenyon does almost vampires, too, and I sort of like those, but still isn't there another author besides Sands who's started a funny romance series about pseudo-vampires?

The brain is shot. (G)

LOL I have The Real Deal and I did like it. Liked Ready and Willing too... so there ;). I have All Through the Night. But I don't get the buzz and such because unlike many of you guys I wasn't around when they came out.

I was off playing on xfiles boards and before that... uh we aren't gonna go there.

I tend to over buzz myself ;). That is why I was afraid I would hate DiW and I know there will come a Ward book I don't like. There is no way I can go 10 books in a series and not dislike something. Or even like the book but not like things about it.

Bev are you talking about MaryJanice Davidson? And Erin McCarthy has a vamp funny coming out this summer. Or uhhh Kathy Love? the Fang books?

so you're not reading J R Ward then? *g*

I agree with you on a few of those - others are my fav books. Thank the gods we all have different tastes - otherwise life would be boring.

I thought you er actually liked the The Real Deal.
Bite your tongue, Keishon! I like geeks, but that book? Let me put this way: I wrote a parody of TRD. IIRC, it involves a metal-gun-eyed ninja in a lab coat, a transgendered villain, and a businesswoman-cum-bellydancer.

I'm all about the buzz but like you I've been really burned in the past. You'd think I'd learn but nooo ...
*laughing* Same here, Giselle.

I thought it was Mr. Impossible that was the overhyped Chase book. ^^; I liked Miss Wonderful, but the followup?
To be honest, BOTH are overrated. I liked both, but neither is, IMO, that special.

so you're not reading J R Ward then? *g*
At the mo? No. You can bet a fiver on that. :D

Thank the gods we all have different tastes - otherwise life would be boring.
Amen, Jaynie.

Sorry about this weird way of responding. I'm testing it out to see if it's better. If not, I'll return to normality.
