Movie Meme
Always and never are two words you should always remember never to use.

AngieW tagged me with her movie meme a couple of weeks ago, and this is my second attempt. :D
Last film I watched:
I wish I did this meme yesterday, but *sigh* I've just finished watching a Demi Moore film, Striptease, based on Carl Hiaasen's novel. Utterly crap.
Five favorite films I either watch frequently or that mean a lot to me:
This is very difficult because I have seen too many films. Well, take AFI Top 100 Greatest Films, for instance. Of all films listed, I haven't seen Dance With the Wolves and Singin' in the Rain [and have no intention to see them during my lifetime].
So I have seen quite a few films, which makes it a tough job, but I decided to create a criteria for this time: a) it has to be made in 1997 and/or 1998, b) it has to be American, and c) it has to be those I watch regularly.
Here's my list in no particular order. - L.A. Confidential [1997] It's quite funny because I'm not keen on almost all actors in this film and its director, but they did well enough to make it highly watchable. Every time I stumbled across this on TV, I ended up watching it. A fabulous film.
- The Fifth Element [1997] IMO, the best thing about The Fifth Element is film editor Sylvie Landra. Her work for this film seriously blew my mind. That opera/fight scene? Fanfuckingtastic. It's poetry in motion.
- Eve's Bayou [1997] Perfect for a late Sunday afternoon viewing, especially during summer. I still can't believe that this is largely [and undeservedly] forgotten. I don't think I'd ever get tired of it.
- Practical Magic [1998] I'm not a fan of Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, but I decided to watch this film because I like Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing. Although it has its flaws, I liked it enough to watch it whenever I'm in the mood for an uplifting film.
- Out of Sight [1998] In spite of its flaws, it's a well-written piece with rich black humour, punchy dialogue and great chemistry between Jennifer Lopez and George Clooney. I also think it's a good improvement on Elmore Leonard's novel.

Oh...I loved The Fifth Element. Now I want to go watch it again.
I am horrible about watching movies. I just never find the urge to sit down for a couple hours. It's pathetic. I think all the dvds I own might fit on one shelf of my bookcase. Maybe two. Seriously. And I haven't seen half of them, probably.
And I agree that traditional romances can't be made into film. Why...eh, I don't feel like figuring out what I think into words.
And Happily Never After is fucked up. Will tell you later.

Count me as another Fifth Element lover -- totally agree about the opera scene. The first time I saw it in the theater, it absolutely blew me away.
...I haven't seen the others on your top five list. *slinks away*

Fifth Element is by far one of my favorite movies. I went with hubby and two friends. My hub and her hub fell asleep during the movie. Whatever. Also, this movie cemented my love of Bruce Willis - and it is during the opera scene that he truly shines ::sigh::.
I've never been part of a meme before but, I am worried that you picked movies from a two year stretch. Me thinks you have too many fav. movies and maybe you need to share!

Maili, out of the films you've mentioned, the only two I've watched, are Practical Magic (Love West and Channing too) and Forrest Gump.
I can't believe you hated Forrest Gump, heathen!!

Ok, I'll just pretend I'm not on the sidebar *g*
I haven't been to the movies since Lord of the Rings lol.

Loved LA Confidential, though I too dislike most of the actors.
Will answer the rest Sunday on my blog. This'll require a bit of thought. I don't see movies often unless it's with the children.

One more for The Fifth Element.
I agree Forrest Gump--yuck.

I liked Forrest Gump but it was one of those movies that I only needed to see once. For a while my favorite movie has been Weekend at Bernies II but I think it's been replaced by Shakespeare in Love which I seem to listen to off Listentoamovie.com at least twice a week.

Hey, Maili -- if you liked Smoke Signals, you should look for Dance Me Outside which also features the delectable Adam Black.

LOL - about Will divorcing you over your hatred for 2001!
I personally hate everything Stanley Kubrick. Of course The Boyfriend thinks he's a bloody genius. So Wendy must endure A Clockwork Orange and Eyes Wide Shut every now and then. Bleck! Hate, hate, hate Kubrick!
Although I do find The Shining strangely mesmerizing in parts. Those little girls creep me out....

I just watched His Girl Friday again with the kids. Now that's fun. Dated in some ways, but the wit isn't.

I think I shall answer some of these in more depth at mine but the worst movie I ever saw was a movie called Thunder Pants about a wee young lad who had a severe flatulence problem. I watched about 10 minutes of it then watched my husband who thought it was hilarious and kept saying "why are you WATCHING this????" I watched about another 10 minutes then just couldn't watch anymore. Oddly enough the movie starred Rupert Gint in a pre Harry Potter role.

Singing in the Rain is one of my favorite movies. Of course, Gene Kelly is my fav. :-D

My comment, of course has nothing to do with the movie meme.
instead, I want to laugh hysterically for a moment at the "bunnies thumpin" bit titling the comments that are newly made when I revisit your blog. Love it!

Nicole - I watched the Fifth Element this morning while I was the sock pairing hell [I hate this part of housework, sorting socks into correct pairings]. :D My belief why traditional romances can't be made into film is because a romance relies heavily on the h/h's internal thoughts and emotions, which makes it difficult to transfer onto screen. Ooh, this might make a good topic for a blog post. Hm...
HNA is fucked up? Ooh, it's not as good as you hoped for? Do blog about that category romance, please. Thanks.
Meljean - ooh, nice one! Well, you COULD list your top five list. *blinks* Purleeeeeeeease?
CindyS - Heh. Nah. International cinema is roughly ninety years old. Do you know how many films were made during this period? There are many, many excellent films, so when I listed one I remember the other. If I were to write up the total 'favourite' list, I can list 500 films. Easily. :) Having said that, I did once write a very long blog, listing top ten favourite films per country. :>
Anne E. - OUT OF THE PAST is a decent film, I agree. HIGH NOON and TOMBSTONE are also good. Nice selection. Sorry, but no, I refuse to watch SINGING IN THE RAIN. Let's leave it at that. :) Thanks.
KarenS - heheheh. IMO, the best performance in FG was the feather. :D Try not to leave any bruises on my face when you beat me up, please.
Jaynie - that's all right. You can count films on TV. *blinks* Please do a film meme!
Amanda - oh, good. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. :) I look forward to seeing your film meme tomorrow. :) I haven't seen films much lately, either, as I saw only ten films this year. So join the club. :)
Tara - yay to one and yay to two. :)
Jay - oh, my, I haven't seen Weekend at Bernie's II. I didn't even know there was a sequel. Ah, SiL. It's a fun and highly rewatchable film. :>
Danielle - oh, thank you. It looks really good. I'll track down a copy to watch DMO. Cheers for that.
Wendy - Will thinks he's a genius, too. *eyes roll* I enjoyed Kubrick's early films [e.g. PATHS OF GLORY and THE KILLING], but his later films? *headdesk* What makes it worse is Will likes to watch it on his birthday. Every f. year. Oh, almost as we missed it this year because he had to go on a weekend-long qualifying yacht race. HAHAHAHAHA! Kubrick's films can easily start off a squabble between us. Sad.
Kate - Oh, HIS GIRL FRIDAY is fun. It's funny you should mention that because I recently read Catherine Judd's Harlequin Superromance INDISCREET and it reminds me of HGF.
Kristie - Urgh, THUNDERPANTS is awful. *shudder*
Jordan - heh. Quite a few people think I'm off my rockers for not wanting to see SITR. :>
Angie - lol! Thanks for the compliment. I'm hoping to change it every two weeks, so keep your eyes peeled. :D
