Interracial romances / TV series on DVD
I was scrolling through an Amazon.com list of interracial romances when it occurred to me I have never read a romance that features the black hero and white heroine pairing. Usually if the hero is not white, then he's Native American, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, or the like, but very rarely black. From what I read so far, it's usually white hero and black heroine, but not the other way round. Can you think of any romances that feature this? Thanks. On a different note, Will and I recently finished watching the fourth season of C.S.I. on DVD and now I'm toying with the idea of purchasing a DVD copy of C.S.I.: Miami or C.S.I.: New York City, but I have been hearing some negative feedback about both branches. Is either worth getting? If not, what other TV series would you recommend? I'm looking for something similar to C.S.I. or something SF-ish. So far, we enjoyed Firefly, Millennium, Battlestar Galatica [is season two out yet?], Dune, Children of Dune, Farscape, Carnivale, Taken, Buffy the Vampire Slayer [Will enjoyed it more than I did], and Deadwood, which Will also enjoyed more than I did. How about Tru Calling? The 4400? Sliders? Crusade? Due to Will's chaotic work schedule, a TV series has to be available on DVD, so with this in mind, all suggestions are welcome. Thanks. BTW, are we the only ones who use TV for DVDs alone? I feel guilty, sometimes, seeing our TV sitting there for no reason than being used for DVDs. It seems such a waste. :P To come to think of it, it's a waste to have a TV licence as well. Ha! Be good, be bad & be safe.

Heh heh. I use the TV almost exclusively for DVDs as well. We don't have cable, so the reception we get for all the local channels is pretty crappy, even with the rabbit-ear antenna on top of the set. Occasionally, if I remember, I'll sit down on Sunday nights and watch The Simpsons, but mostly I get movies and TV series DVDs from the library. Currently working my way through the first season of The Office (the original British version) and alternately laughing my ass off and cringing.

The DVD for the first season of Battlestar Galatica with all the extras, which I plan on purchasing, doesn't come out until 9/20. The second season which is comprised of 20 episodes is still playing out on the SciFi Channel. Episode #7 was broadcast yesterday. Other than that, I am considering buying the first season DVD for Veronica Mars, even though I've never watched it based on the critical buzz it has received in the media and internet. It is being described as the new "Buffy" although there are no supernatural elements.

I like CSI Miami and CSI New York is growing on me. As for a series, I'd recommend picking up LOST if you haven't already. It just came out in DVD. Great show.

There is a season one of BattleStar Galatica!? Canadian television laws blow. We're not allowed to have HBO and I have no clue why ... and breath ... I'll stop now.
Stargate Atlantis has been a real fun show to watch and the second season has just started. I loved Firefly and weep for what might have been ;) Serenity here I come!
I only heard about the 4400 this past month and it is being advertised on Canadian TV where, get this, we can't watch it anyways!!
Oh, and LOST rocks. Have you ever watched Alias? Not Sci-fi but super spy fun at least until this last season.
Horrible admission time - we have 5 TVs. I tried to stop the hubby from the last purchase but he insisted we needed a TV in the living room. Apparently we did.

Oh, yes, Cindy, Alias!! Have you heard of that one, Maili? You have to start with season 1, though, since there's a lot of intertwining stuff that's introduced in the first season. Plus they kind of altered the series in the second season to make it more viewer friendly and accessible for people trying to get introduced to the series in season 2.
As for the interracial romance topic, I think one of the reasons "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," was so controversial was not just for the interracial aspect of the film, but for the specific racial pairing, as well. Since the black man/white woman pairing is much more common in real life (at least in America) than in the media, especially Romance, I'm guessing it links back to one of the slavery taboos. You know -- while the white slaveholders were out raping the black female slaves, they were desperately worried that the black male slaves might be having (consensual) sex with their white wives and daughters. It's one of those places in US history where the warped pathologies of racism and sexism intersected in ways that still seem to have control over our portrayals of interracial couples. Intersting, though, that in terms of Romance, it's women doing most of the writing.

Deanna Lee is the only author I can think of with black heroes and white heroines. She publishes e-books at the moment but is now contracted with Kensington for three books.

I should add that there may be other authors out there who write about black heroes/white heroines, but I have only read Deanna Lee.

I recommend Stargate SG1 - the first 7 seasons are on DVD and the 8th is being released in October.

Janice, I'm in Canada and I bought the TMN package which has movies on demand. There is a TV Series section and that is how I am watching Stargate Atlantis. I wish all TV could be on demand but then, I guess I would watch all my shows in a month and then have to wait 11 for the new ones ;)

Uh, www.stargateatlantis.com has it showing Friday nights on the Sci-fi channel. See if that fits with your line-up. Also, there are message boards that might help you find the affiliate that is hosting the show.
We don't have Sci-fi, we have Space. Once again, sucks to be me.

Maili, the only interracial romances I can think of are in movies or non-romance genre books (mysteries, fantasies).
I'd second the recs for Lost and Alias, as long as you have some heavy-duty suspenders for your disbelief.
Hey, Cindy! ::waves at fellow Canadian:: Space is starting BSG in October, I think. Plus -- all 13 eps of Firefly back-to-back on Labour Day, whoo-hoo.
We shell out for MovieCentral at our house mainly because they broadcast first-run HBO shows (yay Deadwood!).

I haven't read a romance with an Asian hero, white heroine. Where?!?! Which one?!?! Have I been living under a rock?

Barbara Gale has written two (I think) interracial romances for Silhouette Special Edition, (secret baby alert) The Ambassador's Wife I think it's called with a black hero and white heroine and I don't remember the name of the other. It was fairly recent though and had a white hero and black heroine. And there was another black hero white heroine one, it was one of the Silhouette continuity stories. I think AAR reviewed it....
They did. I looked for "interracial" with the Freefind search and it brought up the book(s).
