Supercool article from Candice Proctor

Thanks to Cranky Reader and Candy for this link. Historical romance author Candice Proctor wrote an article about lack of respect towards the romance genre for the Romance Writers of America's newsletter, Romance Writers' Report, but they declined to print it. So she puts it up on her web site, instead.

The Romance Genre Blues, or Why We Don't Get No Respect
Well worth your time reading, I promise. Especially this section: 8. Look at the way we promote our genre and ourselves. Be good, be bad & be safe.
P.S. the mouse is still on loose outside, and the cats are pissed off with me.

Damned good article. I wonder why on earth RWA didn't print it? Maybe it was too honest for them.

She sounds kind of fed up with the romance genre doesn't she? I wonder if that's why, she's no longer writing romance?

I'm thinking your right on the to much honesty bit. It's not all sunshiny happy stuff.
As for her leaving romance, this has been discussed on the RTR board at AAR board. I was horrified when I first found out because she is one of my top two favourite historical authors. From what I read though, she's not moving completely away from romance, there will be some (and a good one according to Tracy Grant) romance still in her next book - which will be a series of historical mysteries with the same cast of characters. If she can do for the past what say JD Robb does for the future - I'll be a happy little camper after all.

Amazing article, Maili! IMO, she's on target. I'd no idea she & Penelope Williamson are sisters (from one the bio pages). I plan to buy her mystery, What Angels Fear, in Nov.
